The Kalkalpen National Park is the most important national forest park in the Alps. With its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is part of a Europe-wide project to protect the last remaining primeval beech forests. These ancient forests with their diversity are a natural treasure. They are home to primeval forest species such as the Alpine longicorn and white-backed woodpecker.
Difficulty: Medium (good physical condition required)
On this day tour, we first hike along the Buchensteig wilderness trail and then continue uphill through the Wilden Graben. Back to the starting point, we follow historical paths through the Weißenbachtal valley. The ancient UNESCO World Heritage forests are remarkable. In the Weißenbach, you can also see how quickly nature is reclaiming areas, be it an abandoned settlement or the former forest road to the Ebenforstalm, which was washed away by floods in 2002.
