Spital am Pyhrn lies between the Warscheneck massif and the Haller Mauern at the foot of the Pyhrn Pass on the border with Styria. The southernmost municipality in the Pyhrn-Priel holiday region has a lot to offer in both summer and winter and, with the fastest funicular railway in Europe, has a trump card up its sleeve at any time of year.
How do extreme mountaineers think and feel? What does it take to climb the highest peaks? What do the 8,000 metre peaks look like from above? The museum "Between Heaven and Earth - Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner and the World of the 8000ers" tells the story of alpinism in an impressive way, explains the physical and psychological conditions for extreme mountaineering and the special features and phases of a high alpine expedition. In the multimedia film room, you can experience extreme weather conditions - from squalls to life-threatening avalanches. A 9 metre high climbing tower awaits in front of the museum. The patron of the exhibition is Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner. Born in Spital, she is the first woman to have climbed all 14 of the world's eight-thousanders without supplemental oxygen.
