Interesting facts about the themed trails around the Kalkalpen National Park

Themed trails are specially designed hiking trails that are dedicated to a specific theme. These can be natural phenomena, history, culture or wildlife. Along these trails there are informative boards and stations that provide interesting facts.

Most of the themed trails are only accessible from May to the end of October. In winter in particular, most of the boards are dismantled and reassembled in spring. Find out about the current conditions in advance at the tourist offices.

The selection of themed trails is diverse. Some examples are

  • Nature trails: Here you can learn about the local flora and fauna.
  • Geological hiking trails: These explain the formation of the landscape and its special features.
  • Cultural trails: These lead to historical sites and provide insights into the culture and old crafts of the region.
  • Themed trails for families: With playful elements and explanations suitable for children.

Themed trails offer a unique opportunity to explore the region's nature and culture in a fun and informative way. They are not only ideal for nature lovers, but also for families with children and anyone interested in the special features of the region.

Many themed trails are specially designed for families with children. There are playful elements, puzzles and tasks that are fun for children and deepen their knowledge at the same time.

The length of the themed trails varies greatly. There are short circular routes that can be completed in an hour, but there are also longer routes that can take a whole day. Find out more in advance on our website or at the tourist offices.

In addition to the usual hiking equipment such as sturdy shoes, rain jacket and provisions, binoculars are recommended so that you can observe nature more closely.

Yes, the Kalkalpen National Park in particular offers guided tours with a ranger on the national park theme trails. These are ideal for learning even more about the special features of the region and the national park.

Dogs are generally allowed, but they should be kept on a lead and not interfere with nature. It is best to check with the respective tourist offices in advance.

Be careful, especially on hiking tours where you encounter grazing livestock:
* Mother cows protect their calves, so try to avoid encounters between grazing livestock and dogs!
* Please always keep dogs under control and on a short lead. If an attack by a grazing animal is foreseeable: Unleash immediately!

You can find 10 rules for the correct handling of grazing livestock in the video at the top of this page.

Respect each other
Whether you are travelling by bike or on foot, we expect respectful interaction between people, nature and animals in our region. You can also help us to maintain this fragile balance. Please pay attention to the signs.
