For safety reasons, the K2 climbing tower in front of the museum is currently closed!
The museum “Between Heaven and Earth – Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner and the world of 8,000ers”, which has been open since 2015, impressively documents the history of alpinism, the physical and psychological conditions endured by extreme climbers, as well as the unique aspects and phases of a high-alpine expedition.
Complete expedition equipment used in several 8,000-meter ascents is also part of the exhibition, as are insights into weather conditions atop the world’s highest summits. In a multimedia video room, you gain a true sense of extreme weather conditions, from gale-force winds to avalanches that threaten life and limb. The honorary patron of the exhibition is Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner, the first woman to conquer all 14 8000-ers without bottled oxygen. In original diary excerpts she gives an insight into their own personal mountain experiences. For goosebumps is provided in the space of experience. You will get your shot of adrenaline while climbing the eight meter high K2 climbing tower. A specially designed app leads hikers from the "base camp" to the "high camp". Experienced athletes go from there to the summit of the Great Pyhrgas.
Rental Equipment: NEW: Audio guides (DE, ENG, CZ and NL) available at the cash desk for € 2!
Hint / Advice: For children there is the museum quiz “With Knowledge to the Summit” for €2.50. Young mountaineers explore the highest mountains in the world, symbolically pack an expedition backpack and guess what dangers and risks extreme mountaineers are exposed to.
