Natural processes are permitted in large areas in the Kalkalpen National Park. Trees can grow old, as nature dictates, storms and insects accelerate forest dynamics. Valuable deadwood is created - the decaying trunks provide food and shelter for forest organisms and are an ideal germination bed for young trees. Since 2017, the national park has even been Austria's first UNESCO World Natural Heritage site for old beech forests and beech primeval forests. Accompanied by a national park ranger, you gain insights into the exciting development of a “primeval forest” of tomorrow.
